Explosive Detection for Tactical Missions

This course is designed to discuss the complexities of training and deploying a K9 to conduct explosive detection in tactical situations. We will cover the variety of missions in law enforcement and military missions where there is applicable and relevant in today's world. We will explore all aspects of assessing the right dog for this job and behavioral and tactical challenges that are synonymous with this type of employment. In addition, we will identify where units fall short in their training regimens and programs to maintain a realistic and specified tactical detector capability.

Topics Include:
  • Identifying the right team
  • Defining capability and mission
  • Behavioral obstacles
  • Training and program shortfalls
  • Skill-based to scenario-based progressions
  • Laser directionals
  • Tactical integration
  • EOD integration

This session explains:

About the instructor

Mark Kaufmann

Mark Kaufmann is the owner and operator of Function First K9 based in Tacoma, WA. Mark has spent nearly 20 years preparing, handling and training multi-purpose canines for world-wide deployments from selection-day to retirement for the 2nd Ranger Battalion. Mark's "mission-first" mentality and philosophy has taken him all over the world to train and deploy with the most capable canine teams and units the world has to offer. It is that mission and determination to discover and optimize training protocols that are substantiated by real-world success and failure. Mark operates off of the grounding principle, "the dog will tell us what is working", enabling him to innovate tactics and techniques to train dog teams efficiently and to the highest standard to be true assets for their teammates in complex situations. The experience has allowed Mark to establish bonafide systems to prepare for deployment, intersecting traditional philosophy with modern behavioral processes and tools. Mark's passion for teaching and coaching these valuable skills and lessons learned motivated him to start his own company, Function First K9, in 2023. FFK9 has conducted dozens of seminars nationally, handler schools, canine procurement, and contracted maintenance training for agencies in his region. His knowledge and experience has assisted teams and organizations to sift through a world of opinion and conjecture to solve real-world problems with real-world solutions. FFK9 also specializes in providing program management consultation and services encompassing training methods and strategies, unit mission and vision, personnel management, culture development, budgeting and fundraising, and policy and SOP updates.

Go to HITS. It's a great class. Great conference. This is the third one that I've been to. I try and go every time. They change up the classes. It's offered for detection and apprehension or patrol canines. All the classes are great. You should definitely check it out. I'm going to try and come back next year.

Hi, this is Brian Laas. I'm from Arvada, Colorado. This is about my second or third time with HITS, and I've enjoyed it greatly. I like the vast amount of instructors' backgrounds, so even though I've come once or twice before, I'm always gaining a lot of knowledge. This is a great seminar for both the new and the old handlers. I think you can't go wrong coming here. It's a good time and well-spent money for your department.

Hi, my name is Neil with U.S. Park Police. This is the first time I ever attend HITS and it's great training. A lot of different courses that definitely benefit my career. I've been a handler for 14 years now. I'm still learning and I recommend people to come down here and learn something.

Been to hits a couple times, keeps getting better every time. This year it's been amazing, a lot of people, a lot of great classes, great camaraderie between all the agencies here. It's a good time, I highly recommend it.

Hi, Mark with BCBK9 here at HITS 2017, lets you know what a success it was. Tons of handlers, tons of great classes. We're really glad that we drove all the way out from Missouri and we're looking forward to 2018 being in DC and we hope to see you all there.

Yeah, this is my first time it hits. It was a great time. Actually, I've been to a lot of conferences before. This is definitely the best.

Legal defensibility is not theoretical. It is tested in court.

This class helps handlers and agencies prepare before that moment arrives.

The Drug Canine Legal Update is one part of a broader HITS program designed to strengthen deployment judgment, detection reliability, and operational decision-making in the field. Additional sessions expand that learning across tracking, behavior, detection science, and tactical leadership.
