Class overview

Police Patrol Dogs handlers face two common issues in modern policing. Addressing these issues through education, proper dog training and sound tactics can be key components to a successful outcome. In this new HITS presentation, Jeff will discuss “Chasing the Bite and Letting the Dog Dictate the Tactics”. Jeff’s presentation works through the manifestation of these phenomenon, how they perpetuate and most importantly, the steps you can take to avoid the costly and sometimes deadly issues surrounding them.

About the instructor

Jeff Meyer

Jeff Meyer retired in 2023 after a distinguished career spanning more than 33 years with the Denver Police Department. Throughout his tenure, he handled, certified, and deployed dogs proficient in locating suspects, narcotics, explosives, firearms, currency, and evidence.

Jeff dedicated over 17 years to the Patrol dog section, where he worked with multiple patrol dogs before assuming the responsibility of establishing a new detection K-9 unit within his department. By the time of his retirement, he had transitioned into a role training dog teams across all divisions of the agency. Over his career, Jeff served as a handler for 27 years and as a trainer for his agency for 23 years.

Beyond his departmental duties, Jeff is recognized for his expertise nationwide, regularly conducting classes for patrol and detection K9 teams throughout the United States. His specialized e-collar training has benefitted over 1000 teams to date. Jeff also contributes as an expert witness, providing testimony on behalf of law enforcement officers.

Jeff further engages with the law enforcement community through his popular podcast, "The Police K9 Training Podcast," which delves into various aspects of police K9 operations and training.

Go to HITS. It's a great class. Great conference. This is the third one that I've been to. I try and go every time. They change up the classes. It's offered for detection and apprehension or patrol canines. All the classes are great. You should definitely check it out. I'm going to try and come back next year.

Hi, this is Brian Laas. I'm from Arvada, Colorado. This is about my second or third time with HITS, and I've enjoyed it greatly. I like the vast amount of instructors' backgrounds, so even though I've come once or twice before, I'm always gaining a lot of knowledge. This is a great seminar for both the new and the old handlers. I think you can't go wrong coming here. It's a good time and well-spent money for your department.
