Class overview

This course presents the 5-Step E-Collar™ System, a structured, step-by-step approach designed to turn the e-collar into a precise communication tool rather than a simple correction device. While many handlers rely on the e-collar as a “hammer,” this system teaches how to use it to create clarity, accountability, and control across all aspects of training and deployment.

Garret Wing breaks down how to apply e-collar pressure through clearly defined phases, allowing dogs to understand expectations, respond consistently, and perform reliably under real-world conditions. This system can be overlaid onto any training objective, from obedience and control (recalls, outs, and positional work) to operational deployment and real-world reliability.

Through live demonstrations and practical examples, this course highlights common handler mistakes that create confusion and limit performance, while providing a clear, repeatable framework for building responsive, confident working dogs capable of operating in high-distraction and high-pressure environments.

Garret Wing is a retired law enforcement lieutenant with over 20 years of experience working with and training police dogs. He is the founder of American Standard Dog Training, DIYK9.com, and the American Standard Academy for Professional Dog Trainers.

Go to HITS. It's a great class. Great conference. This is the third one that I've been to. I try and go every time. They change up the classes. It's offered for detection and apprehension or patrol canines. All the classes are great. You should definitely check it out. I'm going to try and come back next year.

Hi, this is Brian Laas. I'm from Arvada, Colorado. This is about my second or third time with HITS, and I've enjoyed it greatly. I like the vast amount of instructors' backgrounds, so even though I've come once or twice before, I'm always gaining a lot of knowledge. This is a great seminar for both the new and the old handlers. I think you can't go wrong coming here. It's a good time and well-spent money for your department.
